English Audio Transcription & Sound Engineer

Alignerr

Audio Annotation Contractor
Remote (Global) $10 – $50/hr July 14, 2026

Job description

English Audio Transcription & Sound Engineer (AI Training)

About the Role

What if your fluency in English and your trained ear for sound could directly shape how AI understands the human voice? We're looking for skilled English transcribers with audio engineering expertise to convert complex audio into pristine, accurate transcripts — and to apply your sound knowledge to optimize, clean, and evaluate audio quality along the way.

This role sits at the intersection of language precision and technical audio skill. You'll work with a wide range of real-world recordings — from interviews and podcasts to field recordings and mixed-media content — producing the high-quality transcriptions and audio assessments that teach AI systems to truly hear and interpret speech.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. If you have native-level English fluency, sharp listening skills, and a working knowledge of audio engineering, this is your opportunity to do meaningful work on your own schedule.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Listen to English-language audio recordings and produce accurate, well-formatted written transcripts
  • Handle diverse speakers, accents, speech speeds, overlapping dialogue, and varying audio quality
  • Apply audio engineering knowledge to assess and flag recording quality issues — background noise, clipping, frequency imbalances, and distortion
  • Clean, normalize, or enhance audio files when needed using standard audio tools and DAWs
  • Apply consistent formatting, punctuation, speaker labeling, and grammar conventions throughout each transcript
  • Flag unclear, inaudible, or ambiguous segments with precise timestamps and context notes
  • Provide structured feedback on audio quality and transcription challenges to improve future workflows
  • Meet quality standards and turnaround targets for each assignment
  • Work independently and asynchronously on your own schedule

Who You Are

  • Native or near-native fluency in English with excellent written communication skills
  • Strong active listening skills with a keen, trained ear for audio detail
  • Working knowledge of audio engineering fundamentals — signal flow, EQ, noise reduction, normalization, and common DAWs (Audacity, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, Logic, or similar)
  • Good typing speed and accuracy — you can keep pace with natural speech
  • Patient, focused, and methodical when working through challenging or degraded audio
  • Able to follow detailed transcription and audio quality guidelines with consistency
  • Comfortable using web-based tools, transcription software, and audio editing platforms
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently without supervision

Nice to Have

  • Professional experience in transcription, captioning, or subtitling
  • Formal training or certification in audio engineering, sound design, or music production
  • Experience with podcast production, broadcast media, or field recording
  • Familiarity with different English accents and dialects — American, British, Australian, South African, Indian, and beyond
  • Background in journalism, linguistics, court reporting, or administrative transcription
  • Experience with AI training data pipelines or annotation workflows

Why Join Us

  • Work on real AI projects alongside leading research labs shaping the future of speech technology
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Combine your language skills and audio expertise in a single, meaningful role
