Alignerr Review 2026: Is It Legit, and What Does It Pay?

Alignerr Review 2026: Is It Legit, and What Does It Pay? - Remote work article featured image

Alignerr pays better than almost anything else in AI training work, and we can show you the rates on a real dashboard rather than repeating a press release. It is also the platform where the largest number of people do work and never see the money, and where an entire list of countries is turned away at the door. This review separates three things most articles blur together: what Alignerr says, what we saw inside our own account, and what contributors report.

The quick answer: Alignerr is legit. It is built by Labelbox, it charges nothing to join, and the high rates are real: our own account was invited to a role listing $60 to $120 an hour. Two things should change how you approach it. Payment terms are set per project, and a minority of projects only pay for work a reviewer accepts, which is where people lose hours. And it is closed to roughly two dozen countries, so check that you can even reach the site before you invest an evening in applying.

Last updated: October 17, 2026 Written by Geoffrey Muchoki First-hand: our own Alignerr account

Screenshots below are from our own account. Platform rules are quoted from Alignerr's own process page and FAQ, which we expanded in full because the answers are hidden behind scripted accordions. Anything from workers is labelled as reported, never presented as our experience.

What Is Alignerr?

Alignerr is the contributor arm of Labelbox, the enterprise training-data company. In Alignerr's own words, it is "powered by Labelbox, a leading training data platform used by top AI companies to build and improve models." You are an independent contractor, not an employee, and the site claims more than 100,000 people have signed up.

The structure matters more than the branding. Alignerr is not a general task queue like Outlier. It is a job board: you browse listings, apply to specific roles, and if you are selected you work that project inside the Labelbox platform. When a project ends, it ends, and you go back to the board. That is why the experience swings between busy and completely empty.

The public board: a run of Marketing Task Author roles at $20 to $50 an hour, sorted into Audio, Coding, General and STEM tracks.

How Much Does Alignerr Really Pay?

Alignerr will not publish a single rate, and its FAQ says only that "rates vary by project and skillset" and that terms are "clearly listed in each project description before you start." So here is what is actually visible rather than a set of invented tiers.

On its own process page, Alignerr advertises up to $150 an hour for Finance and Accounting experts and for Computer Vision and ML experts, and up to $120 for Legal and Compliance. The public board on the day we looked was more modest, with generalist Marketing Task Author roles at $20 to $50. And inside our own account, the invitation we received was for a senior engineering role listing $60 to $120 an hour.

Watch the billing unit on voice work

Voice and audio projects across this industry are often billed per finished hour of audio, not per hour you work. Because a clean finished minute can take several hours to record and re-record, contributors report an advertised $35 to $45 rate collapsing to roughly $9 per hour actually worked. Read the unit before the number.

How You Actually Get Paid

This is the part every other review gets wrong, and the answer is written plainly inside the app. Alignerr does not pay bi-weekly, and Deel is not the rail. Our earnings page states it exactly: "Alignerrs are paid weekly. Pay periods run Monday to Sunday, and you're paid by the following Friday."

The weekly cycle, stated in the app. Note the other number: $0.00, on an account that finished onboarding. More on that below.

On the rail itself, Alignerr's process page says "Stripe Connect and PayPal are our trusted payment partners." In practice our dashboard asked for PayPal and warned that "you can only use the payment method shown on your dashboard," so treat the choice as assigned rather than offered.

The clause that costs people hours

Alignerr's FAQ makes a firm promise: "All Alignerrs are paid for completed work, even if it's graded to be low quality. The only exception are the most extreme cases of fraud."

Set that against the most upvoted balanced critique in the Alignerr community, titled "I like Alignerr, but the pay only if work is accepted thing should not be a thing." The contributor describes being invited to a complex project where "you are paid a high sum per task, but only if it is accepted," and declining it because a strict reviewer has "many angles for them not to accept the task, so you risk spending a lot of time with nothing to show for it."

The nuance is the useful part, and it is worth stating precisely because it is easy to sensationalise. That same contributor is positive about the platform overall and says plainly that "most projects aren't like this." So the honest takeaway is not that Alignerr refuses to pay. It is that payment terms are set per project, a minority of projects gate payment on reviewer acceptance, and unpaid evaluation phases are reported on top of that. Read the payment model in the project description before you start, which is exactly where Alignerr says it will be.

Is Alignerr Legit?

Yes, in the sense that decides it: the company is real and the money moves. Labelbox is an established enterprise data business, identity is verified through Persona, contracts and payouts run through named providers, and there is no fee to join at any point.

Where it gets interesting is that the public verdicts point in opposite directions. Alignerr holds roughly 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot across about 3,000 reviews. Meanwhile the top post of the year in its own subreddit is titled "So it's official now, I got scammed," and the surrounding threads read like a payments-department queue: "5 Weeks Without a Payment," "Worked a project and No pay," "Approved work wiped after account closure," "Removed from Alignerr with no explanation."

Both are real, and the gap is explainable. Trustpilot captures the broad base of people who applied, worked and got paid on ordinary projects. A platform subreddit concentrates the minority with an unresolved problem, because satisfied contributors rarely post. The same subreddit also carries "Not Biased, Alignerr is the best Data Labeling Company" and people arriving after being dropped by Outlier. Read the complaints for the mechanisms they describe, which are consistent and specific, rather than as a headcount.

Where Alignerr Is Not Available

This is the question almost nobody answers directly, so here it is with evidence. Alignerr's FAQ says "we welcome applicants from around the world who meet our skill and communication requirements." From Kenya, the site does not load an application form at all.

What Kenya sees. Not a rejection after applying, a wall before it.

A staff reply in the Alignerr community listed the countries it cannot hire from: Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Cuba, Crimea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Vanuatu, Venezuela and Yemen. Two caveats matter: that list is about two years old, and Kenya is not on it even though Kenya is blocked today. So treat it as a floor rather than a complete list, because it has clearly grown.

There is a second, quieter gate. Under its visa question, Alignerr's FAQ states: "we only accept US Driver's Licenses, US State IDs, US Work Permits or US Permanent Residence Cards for identity verification," and adds that verification "is required for all contributors." Phone verification is also US and Canada only, though the FAQ says international applicants can continue without it. Alignerr is more open than US-only in practice, but its identity checks are built around US documents, and that is the friction contributors outside the US keep running into.

How to Get In

The application itself is fast: sign in with Google, upload a resume that auto-fills your profile in about thirty seconds, set your skill preferences, verify identity through Persona, then browse and apply. Contract and billing setup follows approval and takes about an hour.

The filter is what comes next. Depending on the role you may face a domain assessment or an interview with Zara, Alignerr's AI interviewer, which records you and may be reviewed by a human afterwards.

The Zara screen from our account. Note the red line: "AI use or outside human assistance will result in a ban." It also wants a camera, a mic and about 4 Mbps each way.

One myth worth killing: there is no platform-wide "one attempt and you are out" rule. Alignerr says the opposite, that "taking more assessments and performing well increases your chances of being matched quickly," and assignment depends on "your skills, assessment results, availability, and past performance." Individual assessments do have limits, and the well-known WorldSim evaluation reportedly allows two attempts, but the strategy Alignerr rewards is taking more assessments, not hoarding one.

After onboarding, time on many projects is tracked with Hubstaff, and the community runs on Discord. Alignerr's own materials are inconsistent here, with the process page and dashboard pointing to Discord while the FAQ and the acceptance email still say Discourse.

Getting In Is Not the Same as Getting Work

Our own account is the cleanest illustration we can offer. Paperwork completed, security training completed, PayPal connected, Discord access, an invitation to a $60 to $120 an hour role. Earnings to date: $0.00.

Alignerr onboarding checklist showing paperwork completed, security training, connect your PayPal account with a note that you can only use the payment method shown on your dashboard, and get access to Alignerr Discord
Onboarding is quick and clear. The gap between finishing it and being paid is the part nobody warns you about.

That is the platform's defining pattern, and Alignerr half-admits it. Its acceptance email says the team is "currently working on matching projects to your expertise," and its FAQ answer for how long assignment takes is "it depends on current demand and your skillset." Contributors describe the same shape from the other side, with threads titled "Never even got a project" and reports of six busy weeks followed by three quiet months. There is also no notification when tasks appear, so people check the platform manually and occasionally find work already marked missed.

Alignerr vs Mercor and Outlier

Platform Pay The catch
Alignerr$20-$150/hrProject gaps, per-project payment terms, blocked countries
Mercor$16-$200/hrAI interview, selective, feast or famine
Outlier$8-$100/hrOpen in 117 countries, and the rate follows your country

The practical split: Outlier is the one most people can actually join, Mercor chases the highest ceiling through an interview, and Alignerr sits between them with strong rates and the least predictable flow. Nearly everyone who lasts in this work runs two or three at once, which is what the searches for platforms like Alignerr are really asking. Our roundup of AI training platforms that pay covers the full field, and Handshake AI vs Outlier compares the two most common starting points.

Is Alignerr Worth It?

Worth it if you

  • Have a real credential: engineering, finance, law, a STEM field or a language
  • Can reach the site and hold US identity documents
  • Already run another platform and want a higher-rate second stream
  • Can wait weeks between projects without needing the income

Skip it if you

  • Are in one of the blocked countries, the door does not open at all
  • Need predictable weekly income
  • Cannot afford to lose hours on an acceptance-gated project
  • Want voice work at the advertised rate, check the billing unit first

Our verdict: Alignerr has the best pay ceiling of any open-application platform we have tested, and we have the invitation to prove the rates are real. It is also the one where the distance between being accepted and being paid is longest. Apply if you have the credentials and the access, read the payment terms on every project before starting, and never let it be your only income.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alignerr legit or a scam?

Legit. Alignerr is built by Labelbox, verifies identity through Persona, charges nothing to join, and pays through named providers. It holds about 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 3,000 reviews. The serious complaints are about specific mechanisms, acceptance-gated projects, unpaid evaluations and sudden deactivations, rather than the company being fake.

How much does Alignerr pay?

Alignerr's own process page advertises up to $150 an hour for finance and computer-vision experts and up to $120 for legal. Our account was invited to a senior engineering role at $60 to $120 an hour, while the public board showed generalist roles at $20 to $50. Contributor-tracked rates span roughly $15 to $60 an hour with an average near $37. Rates are set per project, not per person.

When does Alignerr pay, and through what?

Weekly, not bi-weekly. The app states that pay periods run Monday to Sunday and you are paid by the following Friday. Alignerr names Stripe Connect and PayPal as its payment partners, and our dashboard required PayPal, noting you can only use the method shown on your dashboard. Deel appears in one older FAQ line but is not the rail contributors are set up on now.

What countries is Alignerr available in?

Most, but not all. A staff list names Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Cuba, Crimea, DR Congo, Eritrea, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Vanuatu, Venezuela and Yemen. That list is about two years old and has grown: Kenya is not on it, yet Kenya now gets a "Location Denied" screen. Identity verification also accepts only US documents, which is a further barrier abroad.

How hard is it to get into Alignerr?

Applying takes minutes, but roles can require a domain assessment or a recorded interview with Zara, Alignerr's AI interviewer, which warns that using AI or outside help results in a ban. There is no platform-wide single-attempt rule. Alignerr says taking more assessments and performing well improves your chances, and matching also weighs availability and past performance. The harder part is after acceptance: many contributors wait weeks or months for a first project.

Is Alignerr better than Mercor or Outlier?

They solve different problems. Outlier is the one most people can actually join, though its rate follows your country. Mercor reaches higher for credentialed specialists via an AI interview. Alignerr pays strongly and is the least predictable on work volume. Most people who last in this work run two or three platforms at once rather than choosing.
