How to Actually Get Paid: PayPal, Payoneer, Wise, Deel & Stripe for Remote AI Work (2026)

How to Actually Get Paid: PayPal, Payoneer, Wise, Deel & Stripe for Remote AI Work (2026) - Remote work article featured image

Finding AI training work is the easy half. Getting the money into your bank account, in your country, without losing 5% to fees, is the half nobody explains. Every platform rides a different payment rail: AfterQuery pays through Stripe, Handshake and Alignerr through Deel, Mindrift through Payoneer, Outlier through a Hyperwallet-powered system, Pila8 through Dots. Pick a platform whose rail does not reach your country and you can pass every assessment and still never see a dollar.

This guide maps every major rail to the platforms that use it, shows what actually lands in your bank from a $300 payout on each one, and gives you the fastest route for your country. The platform-to-rail table alone answers the question we get most: "I got accepted, now how do I actually get paid?"

Last updated: July 2026 Written by Geoffrey Muchoki First-hand payouts on multiple rails

How we researched this guide

We have been paid by these platforms ourselves, from Kenya: through Stripe (AfterQuery, $375 payment documented in our review), through the Stripe/Payoneer/Wise options on RemoExperts ($6,475 in documented payouts), and across accounts on Mindrift, DataAnnotation, CrowdGen, OneForma, SME Careers, and Handshake. Rail-to-platform mappings come from our own payout settings pages; fee figures come from each provider's published pricing as of July 2026, linked in Sources. Fees change; verify your corridor before moving large amounts.

The master table: which platform pays through what

Platform Payment rail Schedule Worth knowing
AfterQueryStripe (bank only)Weekly, FridaysNo PayPal, no minimum; 7-day hold on your first payout; bank country must match your registration
MercorStripe24–48h after task approvalAmong the fastest payouts in the industry
RemoExpertsStripe, Payoneer, or Wise (your pick)MonthlyChoose the rail in your Earnings tab; monthly cycle means slower cash flow
OutlierPayPal, AirTM, or ACH (Hyperwallet underneath)Weekly, processed Tuesday, lands ~FridayAirTM has known ID-verification friction; prefer PayPal or ACH where available
DataAnnotationPayPalOn request, weekly cadencePayPal-only: if PayPal cannot receive money in your country, this platform cannot pay you
Handshake AIDeelWeeklyWithdraw from Deel to bank, Wise, PayPal, Payoneer, Revolut, or Coinbase
AlignerrDeelPer projectSame Deel wallet flexibility as Handshake
SME CareersDeelWeeklySuperAnnotate's expert brand; Deel handles the contractor payroll
MindriftPayoneerPer project cyclePayoneer reaches most countries Toloka serves
CrowdGen (Appen)Payoneer or bank transferMonthlyPayoneer is the practical option outside major banking corridors
OneFormaPayoneer or bank, per projectPer projectPayment terms vary by project; check before starting
TELUS DigitalHyperwallet or direct bankMonthly, varies by programRail depends on your program and country
Pila8DotsPer task batchDots lets you pick from local rails: bank, PayPal, and region-specific options like UPI and PIX
ProlificPayPalOn cash-outPayPal-dependent, same country caveat as DataAnnotation
Silencio and Web3 platformsCrypto / tokensContinuousToken value moves; check liquidity before counting it as income

Read the table backwards too: if you already hold a verified Payoneer account, Mindrift, CrowdGen, OneForma, and RemoExperts can pay you tomorrow. If you have a working PayPal, DataAnnotation, Prolific, and Outlier are open. Setting up the rail before you apply removes the last obstacle between an acceptance email and actual money.

The rails, one by one

Stripe

Used by: AfterQuery · Mercor · RemoExperts (option)

Stripe pays straight into bank accounts in 100+ countries, no wallet in the middle. That makes it the cleanest rail when it covers you and a hard wall when it does not: your bank account country must match your registered location, and platforms inherit Stripe's country gaps. AfterQuery's excluded list (Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Ghana, Bangladesh, Colombia, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, among others) is really a Stripe-payout coverage list.

Speed

2–3 business days to bank

The catch

7-day hold on your first payout

Fees to you

Usually none; FX at bank rates

First-hand: our AfterQuery payments arrived in Kenya on schedule, Fridays, with the documented $375 transfer shown in our review. Expect your first payment roughly 2–3 weeks after starting; every one after that is fast.

Deel

Used by: Handshake AI · Alignerr · SME Careers

Deel is a contractor-payroll layer: the platform pays Deel, your earnings land in a Deel balance, and you choose how to pull them out. That menu is Deel's superpower: local bank transfer (free), Wise, PayPal, Payoneer, Revolut, Coinbase, or a Deel card, depending on your country. If you work for two or three Deel-paying platforms, everything arrives in one balance with one tax-document trail.

Speed

Instant to balance; 0–2 days out

Withdrawal fees

Local bank $0 · cross-border $5 · SWIFT $10

The catch

Card cash-out costs 0.75–2%

The cheapest exit is a local-currency bank transfer or Wise; the expensive exit is the instant card. Route matters more than rail here: the same $500 can cost you $0 or $10+ depending on which button you press.

Payoneer

Used by: Mindrift · CrowdGen · OneForma · RemoExperts (option)

Payoneer's pitch is reach: it pays out in countries where PayPal cannot receive and Stripe does not go, which is why the big multilingual crowd platforms standardize on it. You get receiving accounts in major currencies and withdraw to your local bank. The trade is a fee stack you should actually read: $1.50 per same-currency withdrawal, a fixed $4 on withdrawals under $400, up to 2% currency conversion above the mid-market rate, and a $29.95 annual fee if you receive less than $2,000 in 12 months.

Speed

Hours to 2 business days

Best move

Batch withdrawals above $400

The catch

Up to 2% FX + inactivity fee

Two rules keep Payoneer cheap: never withdraw under $400 (the $4 fixed fee is a 4% tax on a $100 cash-out), and keep enough platform volume flowing through it to clear the $2,000/year inactivity bar.

Wise

Used by: RemoExperts (option) · Deel exit route · any platform that does bank transfers

Wise wins on honesty: mid-market exchange rates with a displayed fee of roughly 0.33% to 2% depending on the currency pair. Few platforms pay "through Wise" directly, but that undersells it. A Wise account gives you local USD, EUR, and GBP account details, so any platform that offers "bank transfer" can pay your Wise USD details, and you convert to your home currency at close to the real rate instead of a bank's or PayPal's marked-up one.

Speed

Often same day to 2 days

FX cost

~0.33–2% at mid-market

Best for

Cheapest conversions overall

The power play for multi-platform workers: receive everything in USD (Stripe, Deel, bank transfers) into Wise, hold it, and convert on your schedule rather than at each platform's payout moment.

PayPal

Used by: DataAnnotation · Prolific · Outlier (option)

PayPal is the most familiar rail and often the fastest to a usable balance, which is why DataAnnotation and Prolific standardize on it. The two problems: coverage and conversion. In a number of countries PayPal accounts can send but not properly receive freelance income, and its currency conversion spread (commonly cited around 3–4% above the base rate) is the widest of any rail here. If PayPal is your only option, withdraw in the currency your account is denominated in and let your bank convert if its rate is better.

Speed

Instant to wallet; 1–3 days to bank

The catch

Widest FX spread of the majors

Dealbreaker check

Can your country RECEIVE?

Before applying to any PayPal-only platform, confirm receiving works in your country, not just that you can open an account. "PayPal exists here" and "PayPal can receive freelance payments here" are different questions.

Hyperwallet

Used by: Outlier (underlying) · TELUS Digital

Hyperwallet (owned by PayPal) is enterprise payout plumbing: the platform funds it, and you pick a localized withdrawal method from whatever menu your country gets. On Outlier it is the system underneath the PayPal, AirTM, and ACH options; TELUS uses it for several programs. Fees depend on what the paying company configured, so two workers on different platforms can see different Hyperwallet costs.

Speed

Platform schedule + 1–3 days

Fees

Set per company, check the menu

Example

Outlier: Tue processing, ~Fri landing

You rarely choose Hyperwallet; a platform chooses it for you. Your decision is which withdrawal option inside it costs least for your country.

AirTM

Used by: Outlier (option) · popular across Latin America

AirTM is a dollar wallet built for countries with unstable currencies or thin banking rails, with direct withdrawals in a dozen Latin American countries (including Argentina, Venezuela's corridor via P2P, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru) plus peer-to-peer cash-out everywhere else. For workers in Argentina or Venezuela it can be the only practical way to hold dollars. Know the limits: monthly withdrawal caps (around $8,000 USDC, lower in Brazil and Argentina) and, on Outlier specifically, repeated contributor reports of painful ID-verification holds.

Speed

Minutes to a day, method-dependent

Fees

Small fixed + ~1% bank; ~0.5% crypto

The catch

Verify identity BEFORE earning

If you must use AirTM, complete every verification step before your balance grows. The documented horror story is a contributor with $1,023 frozen behind an ID check after an account ban. Small, frequent withdrawals beat one big one.

Dots

Used by: Pila8

Dots is a payouts API that newer platforms plug in instead of building payment plumbing. For you it means a cash-out screen with local options: bank transfer, PayPal, and region-specific rails like UPI (India) and PIX (Brazil), drawn from 300+ supported methods. The paying platform generally eats the fees. Pila8 uses it for task-batch payouts, which is part of why Pila8 can pay contributors in countries the Stripe-only platforms exclude.

Speed

Often same day once released

Fees to you

Usually none visible

Best for

Local-rail cash-outs (UPI, PIX)

See our Pila8 review for how the payouts behave in practice.

Crypto & tokens

Used by: Silencio · Web3 data platforms · Deel (Coinbase exit)

Some data platforms pay in tokens (Silencio's noise-collection app rewards in its own token), and Deel offers a Coinbase exit for regular earnings. Crypto reaches countries every other rail fails, and stablecoin payouts settle in minutes. The honest warnings: platform-native tokens can be illiquid or volatile, converting to local currency adds exchange fees and hassle, and your tax office still counts it as income. Treat stablecoins (USDC/USDT) as a payment rail and platform tokens as a lottery ticket.

Speed

Minutes on-chain

Fees

Network + exchange spread

The catch

Token price risk is yours

Only count crypto earnings as income once they are converted, or in a stablecoin you can actually cash out where you live.

On one $300 payout the spread between the best and worst route is about $8. On $1,000 a month for a year, routing badly costs $300–$500, which is a week of task work donated to a payment company. Waiting until a Payoneer balance passes $400, converting through Wise instead of PayPal, and taking Deel's free local-bank exit are the three highest-value habits.

How fast each route pays (task approved → money in bank)

Mercor (Stripe)1–2 days
Deel platforms → local bank1–3 days
Payoneer platforms2–4 days
Outlier weekly cycle (approved Mon → bank Fri)4–5 days
AfterQuery weekly Fridays (after first payout)up to 7 days
AfterQuery FIRST payout (Stripe 7-day hold + bank days)~2–3 weeks
RemoExperts monthly cycleup to ~30 days

First payouts are always the slowest

Stripe holds first payouts about 7 days for fraud checks, wallets want verification before the first cash-out, and monthly platforms make you wait for the cycle. Plan for your first money from any new platform to take 2 to 4 weeks, then speed up permanently. If your dashboard shows earnings but nothing has arrived, read our guide to how platform waves and holds actually work before assuming the worst.

The best route from your country

🇰🇪 Kenya & East Africa

Stripe pays Kenyan banks (our AfterQuery payments prove it), PayPal receives and links to M-Pesa, and Payoneer plus Wise both withdraw to KES. You have full rail coverage; pick platforms freely and use Wise for conversions. First-hand: everything in this paragraph is how we get paid.

🇳🇬 Nigeria & Ghana

The hard mode: Stripe payouts exclude you (so AfterQuery cannot pay), and PayPal receiving is restricted. Your lifelines are Payoneer, Deel-paying platforms (Handshake, Alignerr, SME Careers, withdraw via Payoneer or crypto), and stablecoin rails. Prioritize Deel and Payoneer platforms and skip Stripe-only ones; you will save weeks of frustration.

🇮🇳 India

Payoneer and Wise both withdraw to INR, PayPal works, and Dots-based platforms can pay straight to UPI. Watch conversion stacking: USD → Payoneer → INR at up to 2% loses to a Wise conversion on most days. DataVale-style local projects paying in INR skip the problem entirely.

🇵🇭 Philippines & Southeast Asia

PayPal is strong (GCash links make it practical), Payoneer and Wise cover PHP, IDR, and MYR, and Stripe reaches most of the region. OpenTrain's Indonesia and Malaysia eligibility plus full rail coverage makes SEA one of the easiest regions to get paid in.

🇦🇷 Latin America

Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia sit on AfterQuery's Stripe exclusion list, but the region has its own rails: AirTM direct withdrawals in a dozen countries, PIX through Dots-based platforms, and Deel with local-currency exits. In Argentina and Venezuela, holding USD in AirTM or a stablecoin often beats converting on payday.

🇺🇸 US, Canada, UK & EU

Every rail works; optimize for speed and taxes instead. Stripe and Deel to a local account are effectively free, so pick platforms on pay rate, not payment method, and keep records: US contractors get a 1099-NEC at $600+ per platform, and the EU equivalents arrive whether you tracked your income or not.

Frequently asked questions

How does Outlier pay you?

Weekly, on a Tuesday-through-Monday work period: payments process Tuesday and typically land by Friday. The options are PayPal, AirTM, or ACH bank transfer, running on Hyperwallet underneath. Community reports flag AirTM ID-verification problems, so use PayPal or ACH where you can.

Which AI training platforms pay through PayPal?

DataAnnotation and Prolific are PayPal-first, and Outlier offers it as one of three options. Deel-paying platforms (Handshake, Alignerr, SME Careers) can also route your withdrawal to PayPal. If PayPal cannot receive payments in your country, choose Payoneer or Deel platforms instead.

Which platforms pay through Payoneer?

Mindrift, CrowdGen (Appen), and OneForma use Payoneer directly; RemoExperts offers it as one of three payout choices; and Deel platforms can route withdrawals to it. Keep withdrawals above $400 to dodge the fixed $4 small-withdrawal fee, and above $2,000 a year to avoid the $29.95 inactivity charge.

What if PayPal is not available in my country?

Skip PayPal-only platforms (DataAnnotation, Prolific) and build your stack from Payoneer platforms (Mindrift, CrowdGen, OneForma), Deel platforms (Handshake, Alignerr, SME Careers), and Dots or AirTM platforms with local rails. A Wise account fills the remaining gap by receiving any plain bank transfer.

Why is my first payment taking so long?

First payouts carry one-time delays: Stripe holds the first transfer about 7 days for fraud checks, wallets require identity verification before the first cash-out, and monthly platforms wait for the cycle to close. Expect 2 to 4 weeks for the first payment on any new platform, and normal speed afterward.

Payoneer or Wise: which is better for AI training income?

Payoneer wins on platform support (more platforms pay into it directly) and country reach; Wise wins on cost (mid-market rates, roughly 0.33–2% total). The strong setup is both: receive on Payoneer where platforms require it, receive bank transfers into Wise everywhere else, and do your conversions on the Wise side.

Do AI platforms charge fees on payouts?

The platforms themselves usually pay the sending costs; what eats your money is the rail: currency conversion spreads, withdrawal fees, and small-amount penalties. The same $300 payout can land as $297.90 through Wise or $289.50 through PayPal. Routing is your job, and it is worth real money.

Sources & how to verify this

  • First-hand (primary): our own payout records: AfterQuery via Stripe to Kenya (documented in the AfterQuery review), RemoExperts' Stripe/Payoneer/Wise payout menu ($6,475 documented in the RemoExperts review), plus payout settings pages on our Mindrift, DataAnnotation, CrowdGen, OneForma, SME Careers, and Handshake accounts.
  • Provider pricing (July 2026): Payoneer pricing, Wise pricing, Deel withdrawal fees, AirTM fees and limits, and Dots payouts.
  • Community reports (not our accounts): contributor documentation of Outlier's weekly Hyperwallet-based cycle and AirTM verification holds, including a reported $1,023 stuck behind an ID check.

Fees and coverage change without notice, and corridors differ. Figures here reflect published pricing in July 2026; confirm your own corridor before moving significant amounts. This guide is refreshed as platforms change rails.

The bottom line

Set up your rails before you apply, not after you earn. The strongest general setup is a verified Payoneer account plus a Wise account (and PayPal where it fully works): that combination can receive from every platform in the master table except the Stripe-only ones, which need nothing but your bank details anyway. Batch small withdrawals, convert at mid-market through Wise, finish every wallet verification while your balance is still zero, and route around your country's dead rails instead of fighting them. The work is hard enough; collecting the money should not be.

Pick Platforms That Can Pay You

Every RemoWork company profile lists payout methods and country eligibility, so you can build a stack whose money actually reaches your bank.
