Medical Director, Oncology
Job description
OUR MISSION
We exist to create a more connected, compassionate, and confident experience for people with cancer and those who care for them. We make it easier to get answers, access high-quality care quickly, and feel supported throughout treatment and beyond.
Today, Thyme Care is a market-leading value-based oncology care enabler, partnering with national and regional health plans, providers, and employers to deliver better outcomes and lower costs for thousands of people across the country. Our model combines high-touch human support with powerful technology and AI to bring together everyone involved in a person’s cancer journey: caregivers, oncologists, health plans, and employers.
As a tech-native organization, we believe technology should strengthen the human connection at the center of care. Through data science, automation, and AI, we simplify complexity, improve collaboration, and help care teams focus on what matters most: supporting people through cancer.
Looking ahead, our vision is bold: to become a household name in cancer care, where every person diagnosed asks for Thyme Care by name. If you’re inspired to make cancer care more human and to help reimagine what’s possible, we’d love to meet you. Together, we can build a future where every person with cancer feels truly cared for, in every moment that matters.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Join Our Team as a Medical Director for Oncology.
We’re looking for a medical oncologist to serve as our Medical Director for Oncology and join our growing clinical team. You’ll help shape how we care for members with cancer within an integrated, patient-centered navigation model.
The role has three core responsibilities:
**1. Clinical Leadership and Oncology Expertise
**You will serve as one of the organization’s clinical authorities on oncology, providing guidance and consultation across teams so that members with cancer receive high-quality, evidence-based care. You’ll lead educational efforts and participate in clinical workflow design to strengthen oncology care across the organization. You’ll also partner with our Care Team (Community Health Workers, Social Workers, Oncology Nurse Navigators, and Nurse Practitioners), provide clinical oversight to the case management team, and collaborate with external oncologists to support coordinated care.
2. Innovation in Patient-Centered Outcomes
You will guide our oncology outcomes work, including our electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) program, with a focus on ensuring members have well-managed side effects and proactive intervention. You’ll lead efforts to address systemic therapy toxicities and their intersection with comorbid disease. Working with cross-functional teams, you’ll support training, refine processes, and track key performance indicators to measure our impact.
3. Strategic Collaboration with External Partners
You will participate in external interdisciplinary team meetings with partner organizations to align on care delivery and streamline care coordination. You’ll report on oncology performance and outcomes to contracted partners, including through Quarterly Business Reviews and Joint Operating Committees, and contribute to Board sessions as needed.
This role offers an opportunity to be part of a forward-thinking, supportive, and highly collaborative team. This role reports to our VP for Clinical Outcomes & Quality, and you'll work remotely or in a hybrid setting from our Nashville or New York City offices.
Within your first three months, you will:
- Complete training and be up to speed on Thyme Care’s systems, tools, technology, partners, and clinical expectations.
- Be adept at developing evidence-based, member-centered care plans that will guide our Community Health Workers and Oncology Nurse Navigators in effectively prioritizing our member's needs and goals.
- Be comfortable following policies, procedures, escalation pathways, communication best practices, and documentation standards.
WHAT LEADS TO SUCCESS
People-first. Thyme Care’s mission and members matter to you deeply.
Experience. You have at least 3 years of clinical experience caring for oncology patients after fellowship training with board certification in medical oncology. You have an unrestricted medical license and a willingness to obtain additional state licenses as needed.
Organized. You’re skilled in juggling multiple tasks and working under pressure without sacrificing organization in your communications and documentation.
Effective listener and communicator. You are decisive and articulate, but you always start by listening, and you hear what may not be voiced because you listen so intently to others. You build rapport and excellent working relationships with members and colleagues.
Comfort with ambiguity. Start-ups are fast-paced environments, and you understand that rapid changes to the business, strategy, organization, and priorities are par for the course… and part of the adventure.
A desire to learn how to use new technologies. We are a technology company focused on interacting with folks during the season when they need it most. Experience with video chatting, Google Suite, Slack, electronic health records, or comfort in using and learning new technology is vital.
Identify priorities and take action. You know how to identify and prioritize a member's needs and do what it takes to address urgent needs.
