Role Overview
Mercor is seeking a Basque Audio Generalist Evaluator Expert to contribute to a high-impact audio AI research project with a leading research lab.
In this role, you will work on transcription, annotation, evaluation, and quality assurance tasks that help train and benchmark advanced language models. This opportunity is ideal for individuals with strong analytical, academic, linguistic, or research backgrounds who are fluent in both Basque (Euskara) and English.
Responsibilities
Transcribe and Optimize Audio & Video
- Listen to, analyze, and transcribe audio and video content in Basque (Euskara)
- Produce high-quality written outputs in Basque and complete supporting work in English when required
- Ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with formatting requirements
- Capture tone, intent, formal and informal language, regional expressions, dialectal variations, and contemporary Basque usage
Define and Document Evaluation Standards
- Establish standards for high-quality responses in consumer audio tasks
- Create evaluation rubrics and grading guidelines in Basque and English
- Document standards to ensure reviewer consistency
- Identify linguistic nuances, grammatical complexities, dialect differences, colloquialisms, and edge cases specific to Basque
Conduct Model Testing and Grading
- Test AI-generated outputs and evaluate responses for accuracy, completeness, fluency, and instruction adherence
- Provide structured feedback to improve model performance
Support Benchmarking and Quality Assurance
- Participate in QA and review processes
- Verify task and rubric quality before benchmark integration
- Collaborate with project leads to improve task design and resolve ambiguities
Minimum Qualifications
- Native or near-native fluency in Basque (spoken and written) including regional vocabulary and Euskalkiak (Basque dialects)
- Professional fluency in English
- Strong writing, editing, critical thinking, and analytical ability
- Ability to accurately transcribe and analyze Basque audio content
- Availability of 10-20 hours per week
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in linguistics, humanities, social sciences, journalism, translation, localization, or technical disciplines
- Experience with transcription, annotation, localization, evaluation, or research workflows
- Familiarity with Euskara Batua (Standard Basque) and regional Basque dialects
- Interest in artificial intelligence, language models, or applied research

- Qualified candidates will be onboarded and invited to begin project work
Contract & Payment Terms
- Independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote, flexible schedule
- $50/hour — weekly payments through Stripe or Wise
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on business needs and performance
