Job description
About Gramian
Gramian Consultancy is a boutique consultancy specializing in IT professional services and engineering talent solutions. With a strong background in software engineering and leadership, we help companies build high-performing teams by matching them with professionals who truly fit their needs.
About the Role
We are seeking a Biology and Bioinformatics Research Specialist with doctoral-level expertise or equivalent research experience to support projects focused on training and benchmarking next-generation AI systems. You will design, evaluate, and improve biological data analysis workflows, validate computational methods, and assess AI-generated scientific outputs for accuracy and reproducibility. Working across areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, computational biology, and biostatistics, you will apply rigorous scientific reasoning to real biological datasets and communicate findings clearly to technical and scientific collaborators. Prior AI experience is not required; deep domain expertise and hands-on computational research skills are the priority.
SENIORITY: PhD-Level Research Specialist / Experienced Researcher
LANGUAGE: Professional English — C1 or higher
TARGET LOCATIONS: US and Canada are our top priorities, followed by the UK, Australia, and NZ. We’re open to candidates worldwide as long as they meet the C1 English level.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, evaluate, and critique biology, bioinformatics, and computational biology workflows for AI benchmarking initiatives.
- Review genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and other biological data analysis pipelines for scientific accuracy and reproducibility.
- Assess and optimize pipeline parameters, software configurations, and statistical methods.
- Analyze biological datasets, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), RNA-seq, single-cell data, variant-calling outputs, and protein structures.
- Validate computational approaches and provide actionable recommendations to improve scientific reliability.
- Apply domain expertise to guide the development and evaluation of biology-focused AI models and tools.
- Document methodologies, findings, limitations, and best practices to support reproducible research and knowledge transfer.
- Communicate complex scientific concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Areas of Expertise
Candidates should have deep expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Genomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis
- Transcriptomics and single-cell analysis
- Proteomics and structural biology
- Molecular and cell biology
- Systems biology and biological network analysis
- Drug discovery and computational pharmacology
- Biostatistics and machine learning applied to biology
Requirements
PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a closely related STEM field, or equivalent industry or research experience.
Professional written and spoken English proficiency at C1 level or higher.
Deep expertise in at least one relevant biological or computational research area.
Hands-on experience analyzing real biological datasets.
Proficiency in Python and/or R for scientific analysis.
Experience with relevant tools and libraries, such as BLAST, samtools, GATK, Bioconductor, or Biopython, depending on the candidate's specialization.
Strong statistical, quantitative, analytical, and scientific reasoning skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical methods and document results.
