Job description

Math Expert or Specialist (AI Training)

About the Role

What if your years of advanced mathematical training could directly shape how AI reasons, solves problems, and thinks — for millions of people around the world? We're looking for Mathematics and Statistics experts to help fine-tune the next generation of large language models by designing rigorous problems, evaluating AI reasoning, and pushing the boundaries of what these systems can do.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for PhDs and advanced researchers. No AI background needed — just deep mathematical expertise and a sharp analytical mind.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design advanced, multi-step math problems that rigorously test AI performance across areas like abstract reasoning, symbolic manipulation, and proof construction
  • Develop clear, logically structured, step-by-step solutions to serve as gold-standard benchmarks
  • Evaluate AI-generated outputs for mathematical accuracy, depth of reasoning, and solution quality
  • Collaborate with researchers to refine and expand benchmarks spanning undergraduate through PhD-level mathematics
  • Provide detailed, structured feedback that directly improves how leading AI models handle complex quantitative reasoning

Who You Are

  • Currently pursuing or holding a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field
  • Strong mathematical reasoning across advanced domains — from analysis and algebra to probability and beyond
  • Able to communicate complex ideas clearly and precisely in writing
  • Detail-oriented and methodical — you notice when logic breaks down and you know how to fix it
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently on an asynchronous schedule
  • No prior AI or machine learning experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, evaluation systems, or quality assessment workflows
  • Familiarity with AI tools or large language models as an end user
  • Background spanning multiple mathematical disciplines — pure, applied, computational, or statistical
  • Prior work in academic research, tutoring, or curriculum design

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs and top AI teams
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
  • Gain rare, hands-on exposure to how frontier AI models are trained and evaluated
  • Contribute to work that raises the bar for mathematical reasoning in AI — at a global scale
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
