Peraton
Major US government technology and national-security contractor: defense, intelligence, space, cyber, and federal IT. ~17,000 employees, ~$7B revenue. Backed by Veritas Capital.
What is Peraton?
Peraton is one of the larger US government technology and national-security contractors, working across defense, intelligence, space, cyber, homeland security, health, and federal enterprise IT. Its work spans mission-critical systems for defense and intelligence customers, space and satellite ground systems, cybersecurity operations, and large-scale IT modernization for federal civilian agencies. The company is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, employs more than 17,000 people, and generates roughly $7B in annual revenue against a backlog of about $24.4B. Peraton is a portfolio company of Veritas Capital, and its current scale is the product of rapid consolidation: Veritas carved out a government IT services business and rebranded it Peraton, then in February 2021 Peraton acquired Northrop Grumman's IT and mission-support services business for $3.4B, and in May 2021 Veritas acquired the publicly traded Perspecta (NYSE: PRSP) in an all-cash deal valued at $7.1B and combined it with Peraton. That three-way combination created a top-tier government technology platform. Steve Schorer serves as chairman, president, and chief executive officer, appointed in September 2024; he previously led Alion Science and Technology as chairman and CEO from 2017 to 2021 through its sale to Huntington Ingalls Industries. Anyone considering Peraton should understand the defining constraint of this sector: much of the work requires US citizenship and a security clearance.
Mission & values
Do the work others cannot, delivering technology and mission capability for national security, space, intelligence, and federal agencies at the edge of what is possible.
Qualifications
Peraton hires across software and systems engineering, cybersecurity, cloud and infrastructure, data science and analytics, intelligence analysis, space and satellite systems, program and contract management, logistics and mission support, health IT, and corporate functions. Two constraints shape hiring far more than at a commercial tech company. First, citizenship and clearance: a large share of roles require US citizenship and an active or obtainable security clearance (Secret, Top Secret, or TS/SCI, sometimes with a CI or full-scope polygraph). Clearance requirements are stated on each posting, and holding an active clearance materially increases both your options and your pay. Second, work location: cleared work is frequently performed on-site at government facilities, secure spaces, or SCIFs, which by definition cannot be done remotely. That said, Peraton does post genuinely remote and hybrid roles, typically in unclassified federal-civilian IT, health IT, corporate functions, and some software and cloud work. Application flow lives at peraton.com careers. Certifications common in this space (Security+, CISSP, CCNA, cloud certifications) are frequently required by contract, not just preferred.
