Kraken
One of the largest and longest-running crypto exchanges (spot, derivatives, staking, custody). Founded 2011. Fully remote-first across 70+ countries. Reportedly valued around $15B; IPO expected.
What is Kraken?
Kraken is one of the largest and longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges. It offers spot and derivatives trading across a wide range of digital assets, plus staking, custody, and institutional services, and has built a reputation over more than a decade for security and regulatory engagement. Kraken was founded in 2011 by Jesse Powell, who led it as CEO for years and is now Board Chair. It is run by co-CEOs: Dave Ripley, who became CEO in 2023, and Arjun Sethi, who joined as co-CEO in October 2024 and is a co-founder of Tribe Capital. The company is nominally registered in Wyoming and rooted in San Francisco, but it is one of the most prominent fully remote-first employers in the industry: it describes its workforce as distributed across more than 70 countries, speaking over 50 languages, with no central office requirement. For job seekers, that remote-first model is the headline, Kraken hires globally for engineering, security, product, compliance, and support. On funding and scale: Kraken raised capital in 2025 at a valuation reported around $15B, and an IPO has been widely expected. One honest note on stability: like much of the industry, Kraken has been through cycles, headcount peaked above 3,000 in 2022 and, after layoffs including about 400 roles cut in October 2024, was estimated near 1,700 in 2025.
Mission & values
Accelerate the global adoption of crypto by providing a secure, trusted, and accessible exchange and financial platform for digital assets.
Qualifications
Kraken hires across engineering (backend, distributed systems, trading and matching-engine infrastructure, blockchain and protocol, mobile, frontend, data, and a very large security and cryptography organization given it custodies user funds), product, design, data science, compliance and legal (crypto is heavily regulated and jurisdiction-specific), finance, trust and safety, and a global client-support organization. Application flow lives at kraken.com/careers. Because it is fully remote-first across 70+ countries, most roles are genuinely remote, hired against the countries where Kraken can employ people; the posting states the eligible locations. Security, distributed-systems, and low-latency-trading engineering are especially valued, as is real crypto or fintech experience. Compliance, legal, and risk roles are in constant demand given the regulatory environment. Support roles often run in shifts to cover a global, 24/7 market.
