Job description
Role Overview
Mercor is partnering with a leading AI research laboratory to improve multilingual AI systems, with a focus on Arabic language understanding, generation, and cultural alignment.
This role is designed for linguistic experts specializing in Arabic (with relevance to UAE usage and dialectal variation) who will help evaluate, refine, and improve AI-generated language outputs.
You will ensure that model responses are linguistically accurate, contextually appropriate, and culturally aligned with Arabic usage in real-world communication settings.
Responsibilities
AI Language Evaluation
- Review, evaluate, and annotate AI-generated Arabic text for:
- Grammatical correctness
- Fluency and readability
- Semantic accuracy
- Cultural appropriateness (UAE context)
Linguistic Feedback
- Provide structured feedback on grammar and syntax, lexical choice and style, tone and register, and idiomatic expressions and natural phrasing
Dataset Improvement
- Suggest improvements for training datasets
- Identify recurring linguistic errors and edge cases
- Contribute to refining annotation guidelines and linguistic standards
Research Collaboration
- Work with researchers and engineers to identify language-specific challenges, improve model handling of Arabic dialectal variation, and define evaluation criteria for Arabic outputs
Documentation & Guidelines
- Develop clear linguistic guidelines for consistent annotation
- Document observed patterns in model errors
- Help standardize Arabic evaluation frameworks
Requirements
Language Proficiency
- Native-level fluency in Arabic (mandatory)
- Professional fluency in English
Linguistic Expertise
Strong understanding of:
- Arabic grammar (nahw and sarf)
- Syntax and sentence structure
- Semantics and pragmatics
- Register variation (formal, colloquial, dialectal)
- UAE Arabic usage and cultural context
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Translation, Arabic Literature, or Language Studies (preferred)
- Prior experience in linguistic annotation, translation, content review, or localization
Analytical Skills
- Ability to identify subtle linguistic errors
- Strong attention to detail
- Comfort working with structured evaluation frameworks
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with NLP or AI language evaluation projects
- Familiarity with language models and annotation workflows
- Exposure to dialectal Arabic datasets or localization projects
Contract & Payment Terms
- Independent contractor role
- Fully remote and flexible schedule
- Part-time (~10 hours/week)
