Zapier
The archetypal remote-first company. Fully distributed since 2011, no HQ. 800+ employees across 40+ countries. Bootstrapped after a single 2012 seed round. Last valued at $5B.
What is Zapier?
Zapier is the workflow-automation platform that connects 8,000+ apps and lets non-engineers wire them together with no-code "Zaps." Wade Foster (CEO), Bryan Helmig (CTO), and Mike Knoop (President) founded the company at a Startup Weekend in Columbia, Missouri in October 2011 and went through Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch, raising a single $1.3M seed round from Bessemer, DFJ, and Threshold Ventures. Zapier never raised another primary round. Instead the company grew on subscription revenue to profitability and now generates a nine-figure annual run rate, with a 2021 secondary tender led by Sequoia Capital and Steadview Capital setting the company's valuation at $5B. Zapier is the archetypal remote-first software company: it has been fully distributed since day one, has never had a headquarters or a mandatory office, and its playbook (asynchronous work, written communication, structured onboarding, twice-yearly retreats) has been openly published and copied by dozens of remote-first peers. The product surface has grown well beyond core automation into Zapier Tables (no-code databases), Zapier Interfaces (form and app builder), Zapier Canvas (workflow diagramming), and Zapier Central (AI-powered agents that automate multi-step work). Roughly 800 employees work across 40+ countries with no in-person expectation beyond the twice-yearly whole-company retreat.
Mission & values
Make automation work for everyone by giving people the tools to move information between the apps they already use, without writing code.
Qualifications
Zapier hires across engineering (backend, distributed systems, ML and AI, mobile, security, SRE, data platform, frontend), product, design, developer relations, documentation, support, sales, customer success, marketing, and G&A. Application flow lives at zapier.com/jobs. Every role is fully remote, with the eligible-country list on each posting varying based on Zapier's legal entities and Employer of Record coverage; the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, most of the EU, Australia, and New Zealand are the most common. Interview loops emphasize written communication and asynchronous collaboration, since Zapier operates without any expectation of same-time-zone overlap for most roles. The company is well-known for a rigorous but well-organized process: expect a take-home assignment or paid work-simulation project for many roles, followed by cross-functional panels.
