HireVue
Enterprise hiring platform for video interviewing, assessments, and AI-assisted screening. Founded 2004, Utah-based, majority-owned by The Carlyle Group since 2019.
What is HireVue?
HireVue is an enterprise hiring-technology company best known for one-way recorded video interviews, where a candidate answers preset questions on camera on their own time rather than speaking live with a recruiter. The platform also covers structured assessments (including game-based and coding assessments), interview scheduling automation, text recruiting, skills validation, and hiring analytics, and is widely deployed by large employers for high-volume early-stage screening. HireVue was founded in 2004 by Mark Newman, then a 20-year-old undergraduate at Westminster College in Utah, who led it as CEO in its early years. Kevin Parker was CEO by 2017, Anthony Reynolds succeeded him in 2022, and Jeremy Friedman has served as CEO since January 2024. The company is headquartered in South Jordan, Utah (the Salt Lake City area) with roughly 350 employees, hires remote roles across the US and Europe, and runs engineering and delivery hubs including Poland. The Carlyle Group has held a majority stake since that deal closed in October 2019. HireVue's use of AI has drawn scrutiny. Its assessments historically analyzed facial expressions alongside tone and word choice to produce candidate scores; after criticism from candidates and AI researchers, the company removed the facial-analysis component in the early 2020s, with then-CEO Kevin Parker saying it "wasn't worth the concern," while maintaining the technology had not produced bias. In March 2025 the ACLU of Colorado filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division and the EEOC alleging HireVue's software discriminated against a deaf, Native American Intuit employee applying for a promotion; HireVue denied the allegations and said Intuit had not used its AI-based assessment technology in that process.
Mission & values
Help organizations hire faster and more consistently by structuring the early stages of interviewing and assessment, so candidates are evaluated against the same criteria at scale.
Qualifications
Two angles matter here, because most people meet HireVue as a candidate rather than as an employee. (1) Working at HireVue: it hires across software engineering (platform, video infrastructure, backend, frontend, mobile), data science and industrial-organizational (IO) psychology, since its assessments are built and validated by assessment scientists, plus product, design, sales and sales engineering, customer success, implementation, marketing, and G&A. It is remote-friendly, hiring across the US and Europe with delivery hubs including Poland alongside the Utah headquarters. IO-psychology, assessment-validity, and enterprise HR-tech experience are especially relevant. (2) Encountering HireVue when applying elsewhere: many large employers use it for one-way video interviews and assessments. Expect to record answers to preset prompts, typically with a countdown timer and limited retakes, so prepare as you would for a live structured interview and test your camera, microphone, and connection first. If you need accommodations for a disability, accessibility need, or technical limitation, requesting them is a normal part of the process; contact the employer's recruiting team, since the employer (not HireVue) controls the hiring decision.
