Camunda
Developer-focused process orchestration and workflow-automation platform built on open standards (BPMN, DMN). Founded 2008 in Berlin. ~700 staff. Raised ~$126M (Insight Partners-led Series B).
What is Camunda?
Camunda is a process orchestration company: its platform lets organizations design, automate, and run business processes and decisions across their systems and people. It is developer-focused and built on open standards, BPMN for modeling workflows and DMN for decision logic, which lets technical and business teams collaborate on the same process models. The product set includes a workflow (process) engine, a decision engine, a visual modeler, a task list for human steps, an operations cockpit, and analytics/optimization, delivered as the Camunda 8 cloud platform alongside open-source components that have a large developer following. Camunda was founded in 2008 in Berlin by Jakob Freund and Bernd Ruecker. It started as a business-process-management consultancy (Freund co-authored the book "Real-Life BPMN") and grew into a product company as its open-source engine gained adoption. Camunda employs roughly 700 people and has raised about $126M across two rounds, headlined by a Series B in 2021 led by Insight Partners (with Highland Europe among earlier backers). It is headquartered in Berlin and runs a remote-friendly, distributed model with teams across Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, which makes it a real source of remote engineering and go-to-market roles.
Mission & values
Enable organizations to orchestrate complex business processes across people, systems, and devices, using open standards so developers and business teams can automate on the same models.
Qualifications
Camunda hires across engineering (backend and distributed systems, especially JVM/Java and Go for the process engine and cloud platform, plus frontend, SRE, cloud infrastructure, security, and data), developer relations and documentation, product and design, consulting and customer success (technical consultants who help enterprises implement process orchestration), sales and sales engineering, marketing, and G&A. Application flow lives at camunda.com/careers. Distributed-systems and JVM engineering, along with experience in process automation, workflow engines, or event-driven architecture, are especially relevant, and open-source contribution is a natural signal given Camunda's roots. The company is remote-friendly with legal entities in Germany, the US, and the UK; many roles are remote within those countries, and work authorization there matters for many positions, so check each posting. Its culture leans developer- and open-source-oriented.
