What is 1Password?

1Password is the Toronto-founded password manager and identity-security platform now used by more than 150,000 businesses and millions of consumers. Dave Teare and Roustem Karimov founded the company (originally AgileBits Inc.) in 2005 and famously bootstrapped it for 14 years without any outside capital, growing entirely on subscription revenue. That changed in 2019 when Accel led a $200M Series A that was the largest Series A investment in Accel's history and one of the largest in the industry. A $100M Series B and a $620M Series C followed in short order; the January 2022 Series C set 1Password's valuation at $6.8B, with Iconiq Growth leading and participation from Accel, Lightspeed, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, actor Ryan Reynolds, and others. Under CEO Jeff Shiner (in the role since 2012), the company has pushed well beyond consumer password storage into Extended Access Management, an emerging device-trust and access-security category. Two recent acquisitions anchor that shift: Kolide (device trust for the workforce, acquired 2024) and Trelica (SaaS discovery and lifecycle management, acquired 2025). 1Password ships apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android; browser extensions for every major browser; a Passage passkey-infrastructure product for developers; and an enterprise admin console with SSO, SCIM, and audit reporting. The workforce of approximately 1,500 people is distributed across the US, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia, with Toronto and Kitchener as historical anchor hubs but no mandatory office at any level.

Mission & values

Make security so simple that everyone can use it, everywhere, so people and businesses can be secure without giving up on productivity.

Qualifications

1Password hires across engineering (platform, mobile, security, cryptography, ML, infrastructure), product, design, developer relations, security research, sales, sales engineering, customer success, marketing, and G&A. Application flow lives at 1password.com/careers. Every role is remote, with eligibility scoped per posting to specific countries where 1Password has a legal entity or Employer of Record (typically US, Canada, UK, most of the EU, and Australia). Cryptography and mobile engineering hiring is particularly active given the product footprint. Interview loops emphasize written communication and asynchronous collaboration since 1Password operates as a truly distributed company with no expectation of same-time-zone overlap for most roles.
