Writing tips for remote Solutions Engineer cover letters

  • Open with the technical-commercial tension you navigate — it is the defining challenge of the role.
  • Show demo skills: how do you tailor a technical demo to a non-technical buyer?
  • Describe your POC architecture approach — how do you scope and de-risk a proof of concept.
  • Mention the most complex integration you have supported and what made it hard.
  • Show you handle the handoff to implementation well — the role spans the deal boundary.

Hi Theo,

The challenge I find most interesting in solutions engineering is the 40-minute demo that needs to satisfy both the CTO who is worried about data residency and the VP of Finance who just wants to know if it connects to NetSuite. Building one narrative that answers both without patronising either is a craft, and it is one I have spent three years developing.

At Talentops I supported the technical evaluation of enterprise deals averaging $280k ACV. In the past 18 months I have run 14 POCs, of which 11 converted to closed-won — a 79% POC conversion rate. The two things that move that number are: first, defining the success criteria in writing with the customer before the POC starts, and second, identifying the internal champion early enough to coach them through their own procurement process.

My most technically complex engagement was a data pipeline integration for a manufacturing client with an on-premise ERP, a cloud data warehouse, and a strict requirement that no PII leave their private network. I designed a local agent architecture with outbound-only connections, documented the security model clearly enough for their CISO to approve in one review cycle, and ran the POC entirely via async written updates. The deal closed in 60 days.

I like to be the person who is honest about where the product does not fit — not to lose deals, but because a customer who buys something that does not solve their problem becomes a churn risk and a bad reference. I have walked away from two deals in the past year where the fit was genuinely wrong. Both times the account came back 12 months later with a different problem that was a real fit.

Best, Dara Adebola
