QA Engineer Cover Letter Example

My view of QA has always been that the most expensive bugs are the ones that reach production — and the second-most expensive are the ones found by manual regression the week before launch. Both are solvable with the right process, and that is the work I find most satisfying.

At Clarelane I built the test automation suite from scratch for a fintech application processing $50M in monthly transactions. I went from 0% automated coverage to 78% over 12 months, focusing first on the payment and reconciliation flows where production defects were most costly. Regression cycle time dropped from 3 days to 4 hours. In the following 18 months, no payment-related bugs reached production — the most meaningful metric I can point to.

I introduced exploratory testing sessions at the end of each sprint, documented as risk-based charters rather than free-form exploration. Each session takes two hours and has prevented an average of one high-severity release blocker per quarter that automated tests did not catch. The pattern I find most often: edge cases at the intersection of two features that were each tested in isolation but never together.

I write bug reports that engineers can act on without asking questions: reproduction steps in numbered order, environment details, expected versus actual behaviour, and a brief note on why the behaviour matters to the user. I have found that the quality of a bug report predicts the speed of the fix. Happy to share a few examples if that helps give you a sense of how I work.
