Role Overview
Mercor is seeking Plasma & Fusion Experts to help advance frontier AI systems by strengthening their scientific reasoning capabilities. In this fully remote contract role, you will create expert-level problems in plasma physics and fusion energy, review technical content authored by other specialists, and evaluate AI-generated solutions for scientific accuracy, rigor, and correctness.
This opportunity is ideal for researchers with deep expertise in magnetic-confinement fusion, plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, and gyrokinetic simulation who are passionate about applying their scientific knowledge to improve next-generation AI models.
Key Responsibilities
Develop Scientific Problems
- Design expert-level problems covering plasma physics and fusion energy.
- Create challenging tasks involving magnetic confinement, tokamak and stellarator design, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and gyrokinetics.
- Produce scientifically rigorous reference solutions for AI evaluation.
Review Scientific Content
- Review problems authored by other experts for clarity, technical accuracy, and appropriate difficulty.
- Verify scientific correctness and establish reliable ground-truth solutions.
- Recommend improvements to enhance quality and precision.
Evaluate AI Responses
- Assess AI-generated solutions for scientific accuracy and reasoning quality.
- Compare multiple model outputs against expert expectations.
- Deliver Accept, Revise, or Reject decisions with detailed written justifications.
Required Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent research experience in one of the following:
- Plasma Physics
- Fusion Energy
- Nuclear Engineering
- Related scientific discipline
- Hands-on experience with one or more of:
- Magnetic-confinement fusion
- Tokamak systems
- Stellarator systems
- Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)
- Plasma transport
- Gyrokinetic simulation
- Strong scientific writing skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reviewing scientific research or technical publications.
- Experience evaluating complex scientific or engineering problems.
- Interest in AI model evaluation and scientific reasoning.
Compensation
- $75 per hour
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
