Job description

Role Title: Manufacturing Design Engineer

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

micro1 is engaging Manufacturing Design Engineer experts to contribute to a customer’s project focused on advanced mechanical design for manufacturing. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters. Participants will leverage proficiency in FreeCAD or similar parametric CAD platforms to design, document, and validate production-ready components and assemblies. This opportunity is ideal for professionals passionate about precision engineering, technical documentation, and advancing the future of intelligent design tools.

Scope of Work

  1. Create and modify detailed parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable software.
  2. Develop comprehensive engineering drawings, including GD&T and tolerance stack-ups, suitable for manufacturing handoff.
  3. Design for a variety of manufacturing processes, such as sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection molding.
  4. Perform CAD validation and quality assurance reviews to ensure model accuracy and readiness for production use.
  5. Prepare clear, concise technical documentation and assembly instructions as reference materials for AI model training.
  6. Incorporate feedback from technical reviewers to revise and improve CAD models and supporting documents.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Minimum 2 years’ experience designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments.
  2. Expertise in FreeCAD or similar parametric CAD software for advanced modeling, assemblies, and drawing generation.
  3. Hands-on exposure to sheet metal, CNC, plastics, and injection molding design considerations.
  4. Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) best practices.
  5. Proven ability to produce production-grade CAD models and validate them against real-world manufacturability criteria.
  6. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, ensuring clarity in documentation and collaborative exchanges.
  7. Python scripting experience for CAD automation is highly preferred, though not required.
