Role Overview

Mercor is seeking an experienced Legal Team Lead to lead the Law domain for Project Sage (Knowledge Gap Golden Answers). In this leadership role, you will oversee domain experts researching complex legal questions, ensure the production of citation-backed legal answers, assess task complexity, and help build and maintain a high-performing legal expert team.

This is a full-time remote opportunity for experienced legal professionals with strong leadership, legal research, and quality assurance experience who want to contribute to the development of frontier AI systems.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Legal Domain

  • Guide legal domain experts working on complex legal research tasks.
  • Provide direction on difficult legal questions and knowledge gaps.
  • Support the overall success of Project Sage's legal research initiatives.

Research & Validate Legal Knowledge

  • Oversee research involving:
    • State statutes
    • Case law
    • Court forms
    • Procedural rules
    • Citation-backed legal answers
  • Ensure legal responses are accurate, complete, and properly sourced.

Quality Assurance & Task Management

  • Estimate task complexity and ambiguity.
  • Review expert submissions for quality and legal accuracy.
  • Maintain consistent standards across legal deliverables.

Team Leadership

  • Help recruit, onboard, and support legal domain experts.
  • Assist with staffing decisions and workload allocation.
  • Collaborate with QA teams to improve research quality and consistency.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive professional legal experience.
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Legal research
    • Case law
    • State statutes
    • Court procedures
    • Legal citations
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising legal professionals.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing legal research teams.
  • Experience with legal quality assurance or legal knowledge management.
  • Familiarity with AI evaluation, legal AI systems, or human-feedback projects.
