Remote Nurse - Sleep
Job description
A US sleep medicine practice is looking for two licensed nurses to join a small remote clinical team supporting new-patient and return-visit charting, prior authorization, and clinical inbox triage. This is patient-facing work behind the scenes — the provider you support relies on your chart prep to walk into every visit prepared, and on your prior authorization work to keep patients on therapy without delay.
You will not be on the phones with patients. Your product is a clean, correctly-summarized chart, an accurate medication list, a well-prepared A&P, and a prior authorization that gets approved on the first pass more often than not. Attention to clinical detail is the entire job — a wrong PAP setting or a missed device serial number has real consequences downstream.
You will work independently in Athena EMR during US Central business hours, with the provider available asynchronously for clinical questions. If you enjoy the quiet, careful side of clinical work — the summarization, the documentation, the follow-through — and you want a long-term seat with one practice rather than agency task-hopping, read on.
Key Responsibilities
New Patient Chart Prep (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)
- Complete History of Present Illness (HPI) using the practice template
- Document a summary of results from previous sleep study reports
- Obtain serial and device numbers for patients already on PAP therapy, so wireless compliance downloads can be pulled
- Ensure all relevant providers are on the chart — referring provider, PCP, psych, and others
- Add pharmacy information
- Include OSA and HST/PSG patient education materials as appropriate
- Prepare the Assessment & Plan using existing Athena shortcuts
- Set up sleep study orders
- Prepare outgoing letters
Return Visit Chart Prep (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)
- Copy and paste previous notes as the visit baseline
- Document the most recent HST/PSG results
- Summarize PAP settings and compliance download data
- Document the Chief Complaint for the visit
- Summarize current sleep schedule and average Total Sleep Time (TST)
- Update Past Medical History (PMH)
- Update the current medication list
- Set up the Return-to-Office (RTO) visit
- Ensure provider and pharmacy information is current
- Prepare referral letters
- Set up DME and Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) orders
Patient Cases & Refills
- Manage and document patient cases through Athena's case workflow
- Document the last fill date and the date of the last office visit for controlled prescription refills
Administrative & Non-Clinical
- Prepare prior authorization appeal letters, DOT/FAA compliance letters, and complete other patient forms
- Review and sort the clinical inbox; summarize sleep study results received from outside facilities
- Prior authorization for polysomnography (PSG) studies
- Prior authorization for medications, including appeals
- Prepare HST interpretation packets for the provider
Requirements
- Nurse Professional or similar clinical background (Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse preferred), with an active license in your country of residence
- Direct hands-on experience with patient documentation and chart preparation in a live EMR
- Familiarity with PAP therapy documentation and general sleep study protocols
- Proficiency with Athena (athenahealth) EMR
- Strong written and spoken English; clean, professional documentation style
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently in a remote setting
- A private, HIPAA-appropriate home workspace (locked room, secure internet, no PHI exposure to household members)
- Ability to work full-time during US Central Time business hours (approximately 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM CT, which is 9:00 PM – 6:00 AM PHT)
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a US or Western-based clinical remote role
- Specific experience in sleep medicine, pulmonology, or a related specialty
- Experience preparing insurance prior authorizations and appeal letters (medication and diagnostic)
- Experience documenting controlled substance prescriptions and refills
Tools & Software
- Athena / athenahealth (primary EMR)
- Microsoft Teams and OneDrive (internal collaboration)
- Hubstaff (time tracking) and Wise (weekly pay)
- Standard office productivity tools (Microsoft Word, Outlook, PDF)
What Makes You a Great Fit
- You treat a chart the way a good editor treats a manuscript — every field, every date, every number checked before the provider ever sees it
- You would rather ask a clarifying question at 20% completion than deliver 100% of the wrong thing at the end
- You surface your own errors before anyone else finds them, and you know how to amend a chart properly rather than silently overwriting it
- You take documentation corrections without defensiveness and you adjust your pattern the next time
- You can hold a queue of prior authorization work through denials, resubmissions, and appeals without needing someone to chase you
- You understand HIPAA in a home-office context — screen privacy, workspace privacy, and never discussing patients outside the chart
