Job description
AfterQuery is seeking CRISPR and Gene Editing subject-matter experts to contribute to a short-term AI safety evaluation project focused on biological research and biosecurity.
This role is intended for PhD students, PhD researchers, or highly qualified Master's-level researchers with hands-on experience in CRISPR and gene-editing technologies.
Contributors will evaluate AI-generated responses involving gene editing concepts, assess scientific accuracy, and identify potential biosecurity concerns in high-stakes biological domains.

Responsibilities
Evaluate and annotate AI-generated responses related to:
- CRISPR
- Gene editing
- Molecular biology topics
Assess outputs for:
- Scientific accuracy
- Safety relevance
- Potential dual-use concerns
Identify responses that may:
- Misrepresent gene editing concepts
- Raise biosecurity concerns
- Handle sensitive biological topics inappropriately
Provide structured written evaluations and rationale
Complete assigned annotation tasks within project timelines
Required Qualifications
Education
Currently enrolled in or completed:
- PhD (Year 2 or later), or
- Master's degree
in one of the following fields:
- Molecular Biology
- Cell Biology
- Synthetic Biology
- Computational Biology
- Bioengineering
- Genetics
- Microbiology
- Virology
- Biomedical Engineering
Technical Experience
Minimum 2 years of hands-on CRISPR or gene-editing laboratory experience
Experience with:
- CRISPR/Cas9
- Cas12
- Cas13
Familiarity with guide RNA design tools such as:
- Benchling
- CRISPick
- CHOPCHOP
Experience with:
- Cell line work
- Off-target analysis methodologies
Examples include:
- CIRCLE-seq
- GUIDE-seq
Preferred Qualifications
Research involving therapeutic or disease-focused CRISPR applications
Experience with:
- Base editing
- Prime editing
Familiarity with:
- Dual-use research of concern (DURC)
- Biosafety policy
- Biosecurity frameworks
BSL-2 or higher laboratory experience
Programming experience using:
- Python
- R
for bioinformatics or sequence analysis
- Experience with gene-editing companies or biosecurity organizations
