Job description

This is a remote contract opportunity for Legal Research Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to review AI-generated legal research outputs and produce expert legal research content used to train and evaluate advanced AI systems.

Contributors will assess legal reasoning quality, issue analysis, authority selection, citation accuracy, and overall legal correctness while helping improve the reliability of AI-powered legal research.

This opportunity is offered through SME Careers, an AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate that provides training data to leading AI companies and foundation-model labs.

There is no immediate project assigned to this role.

Responsibilities

Develop AI Training Content

  • Create detailed legal research prompts
  • Produce gold-standard legal research outputs including:
    • Issue outlines
    • Research plans
    • Memo templates
    • Authority summaries

Optimize AI Performance

  • Evaluate and rank AI-generated responses
  • Improve:
    • Accuracy
    • Legal reasoning
    • Citation support
    • Defensibility
    • Clarity

Ensure Model Integrity

  • Identify:

    • Legal inaccuracies
    • Unsupported claims
    • Jurisdictional mistakes
    • Misleading certainty
    • Bias
  • Validate output quality across a variety of legal scenarios

Legal Review & Analysis

  • Review issue spotting and legal reasoning
  • Verify authority selection and jurisdiction handling
  • Check citation accuracy and proposition support
  • Assess adherence to prompts and legal research standards
  • Produce clear, risk-aware legal explanations and research memoranda

Required Qualifications

  • JD, LLB, equivalent legal qualification, or advanced paralegal/legal research background

  • 5+ years of professional legal research experience in:

    • Law firms
    • In-house legal departments
    • Government
    • Academia
    • Legal publishing
  • Strong legal research methodology including:

    • Issue framing
    • Jurisdiction selection
    • Authority retrieval
    • Legal synthesis
    • Risk and uncertainty analysis
  • Experience interpreting:

    • Statutes
    • Regulations
    • Case law
  • Understanding of:

    • Holdings versus dicta
    • Procedural posture
    • Jurisdictional differences
  • Strong citation verification skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Minimum C1 English proficiency

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

  • Active bar membership
