Job description
Mercor is seeking participants across Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria to help evaluate a new voice assistant as part of an AI research initiative.
Participants will make real phone calls to a voice assistant, ask genuine questions from their daily lives, and provide feedback through short surveys.
The goal is to improve voice-based AI systems using authentic conversations and real-world use cases.
What You'll Do
Make 5 phone calls to a voice assistant over approximately one week
Ask real questions from your own life across topics such as:
- Health and wellbeing
- Work, farming, or business
- Learning and education
- Practical services and daily-life questions
- Any other topic you genuinely want to ask about
Complete a short survey after each call
Spend approximately:
- 5–15 minutes per call
- 5 minutes per survey
Calls end naturally without strict time limits.
Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must be located in:
- Rwanda
- Kenya
- Ethiopia
- Ghana
- Nigeria
Comfortable communicating in English
Willing to consent to:
- Audio recording
- Call transcription
- Research evaluation purposes
Preferred Backgrounds
The project aims to include a diverse participant group, including:
- Feature phone users
- Smartphone users with limited data access
- Individuals with little or no prior AI assistant experience
- Participants from both rural and urban communities
- A mix of ages and genders
These are preferences rather than strict requirements.
Compensation
- $10–20/hour
- Payment based on actual completed call and survey time
- All call-related costs are covered by the project
Participants do not pay anything to participate.

- Government ID numbers
- Account numbers
- Financial credentials
Calls will be recorded and transcribed for evaluation purposes
Timeline
- Approximately 1 week for onboarding
- Approximately 1 week for call completion
Estimated total commitment:
- 2–3 hours over a two-week period
Contract & Payment Terms
- Independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote participation
- Flexible schedule
- Weekly payments through Stripe or Wise
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded depending on project needs
