Senior Content Engineer

College Board

Engineering & Development Full-time
United States $80,000 – $140,000/yr July 17, 2026

Job description

College Board - Technology

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role: This is a full-time position.

About the Team

The Content Engineering team sits within a multidisciplinary technology team that integrates design, content, and engineering to deliver consistent, scalable user experiences. We support structured content models, authoring ecosystems, metadata standards, and content workflows that power College Board’s digital products and websites.

Our team partners with platform product leadership and serves a broad community of content creators working in DITA, Drupal, HTML-based structured content, and assessment and item-authoring systems. We aim to unify practices, strengthen the discipline, and support content systems that are robust, maintainable, and flexible for the future.

About the Opportunity

As a Senior Content Engineer, you’ll help define and implement the structured content strategy for the Authentic Work Platform — a complex, evolving digital environment that serves both students and professionals. You’ll work across systems like Drupal and XDocs to design content models, metadata, and authoring frameworks that enable reuse, editorial efficiency, and scalable content delivery.

As a key member of a cross-functional team, you’ll collaborate with engineers, designers, and product teams to connect structured content with user-facing features, support decoupled rendering, and drive consistency across print and digital experiences. You’ll apply systems thinking to content — designing models, taxonomies, and workflows that are structured, scalable, and sustainable. This role calls for a strategic architect’s mindset: shaping how content flows across platforms to support technical integration and a cohesive, user-centered experience.

In this role, you will:

  • (35%) Design and document structured content models and metadata frameworks that support scalable content creation, reuse, and maintainability — enabling delivery of new features while improving author workflows and editorial governance.

  • (30%) Provide technical leadership to engineering partners by guiding how structured content is consumed, rendered, and scaled across new UIs — including coaching team members on content APIs, prototyping solutions, and aligning content with front-end needs.

  • (20%) Lead efforts to integrate content consistently across print and digital workflows, improving how complex content is modeled, tagged, and delivered to ensure a unified user experience.

  • (15%) Contribute to the long-term content architecture strategy for the Authentic Work Platform, applying systems thinking and collaborating across disciplines to align content infrastructure with product and user goals.

About You

  • 4–6 years of experience designing structured content or data models and workflows for digital products

  • Expertise in structured content systems such as XML/DITA, with experience in production-scale, user-facing environments

  • Familiarity with enterprise content management systems (e.g., Drupal, XDocs), including authoring workflows and metadata structures

  • Technical fluency in working with structured content — including reading and debugging delivery APIs, scripting transformations, and analyzing markup or metadata to support modeling decisions

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex content systems clearly using diagrams, documentation, or data

  • A systems thinker who applies architectural approaches to content design for scalability, maintainability, and reuse

  • Collaborative mindset with strong influencing and negotiation skills across cross-functional teams

  • A self-starter who enjoys untangling complexity, learning new tools, and driving clarity in ambiguous systems

  • Motivation to support educational and career opportunities for students through thoughtful, scalable content design

  • Designing structured content systems for both author usability and machine readability — balancing editorial workflows with flexible, front-end rendering

  • Leading modernization efforts such as content system migrations, governance improvements, or large-scale model redesigns

  • Collaborating with engineers on shared tooling (e.g., reusable components, content validation, API integration) to streamline implementation

  • Applying content architecture to support personalization, AI-readiness, or improved search and findability across platforms

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., technical communication, information science, computer science) and 4–6 years of experience working with structured content systems — or equivalent experience in a content engineering role.

  • The ability to travel 3-5 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business.

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work

  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.

  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal

  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.

  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.

  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success

  • Authorization to work in the United States

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.

  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise such as live coding, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.
