Job description
Mercor is seeking experienced music transcribers to produce accurate multi-track MIDI transcriptions of complete musical compositions for a frontier generative music AI laboratory.
This is a highly specialized music understanding role focused on converting complete recordings into high-quality symbolic representations. You will identify every note, instrument, rhythm, harmony, and expressive element, producing expert ground-truth data used to train and evaluate next-generation AI music models.
Key Responsibilities
Multi-Track MIDI Transcription
Create precise multi-track MIDI transcriptions from full mixes or provided instrument stems.
Musical Analysis
Capture and accurately represent:
- Pitch
- Note onset
- Note duration
- Velocity
- Harmony
- Key signatures
- Modulations
- Polyphony
MIDI Specification Compliance
Produce transcriptions that follow standardized MIDI specifications, including:
- Quantization
- Tempo mapping
- Drum mapping
- Pitch bends
- Instrument separation
Quality Assurance
Maintain exceptional transcription accuracy while ensuring every MIDI file aligns precisely with the source audio and project guidelines.
Ideal Qualifications
- Professional experience in music transcription, notation, arranging, engraving, or related fields.
- Exceptional ear-training and transcription skills.
- Strong understanding of harmony, rhythm, voice leading, and music theory.
- Ability to accurately transcribe complex polyphonic and multi-instrument compositions by ear.
Technical Skills
Experience with one or more professional music production or notation applications, including:
- Logic Pro
- Cubase
- Reaper
- Pro Tools
- Sibelius
- MuseScore
- Similar DAWs or notation software
