Senior Law Librarian / Research Attorney

Role Overview

Mercor is seeking experienced Senior Law Librarians and Research Attorneys to help design sophisticated legal research questions for an AI evaluation benchmark.

This role is ideal for legal professionals who frequently handle complex research tasks, including cross-jurisdictional analysis, precedent synthesis, and nuanced issue framing. Your work will help evaluate and improve how advanced AI systems reason about legal problems.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft sophisticated legal research questions reflecting complex real-world legal inquiries
• Design research issues requiring:
• Multi-jurisdictional legal analysis
• Resolution of conflicting authorities
• Deep synthesis of legal precedent
• Ensure all questions are grounded in authoritative and verifiable legal sources
• Maintain clarity, realism, and practical scope within research prompts
• Contribute to benchmark datasets used to evaluate AI legal reasoning

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience as a law librarian, research attorney, or senior legal research specialist
• Extensive experience handling complex or escalated research requests
• Strong understanding of advanced legal research methodologies
• Exceptional issue-framing, analytical, and writing skills

Nice to Have

• Experience training junior associates or researchers in legal research techniques
• Exposure to AI-assisted legal research tools
• Experience with dataset annotation, benchmark development, or AI evaluation projects

Contract & Payment Terms

• Independent contractor role
• Fully remote and flexible work schedule
• Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance
