Job description

Software Engineer

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

micro1 is engaging experienced Software Engineers to contribute to a customer project focused on backend software development and AI model evaluation. In this role, you'll use your engineering expertise to help train next-generation AI systems by solving real-world programming tasks, reviewing code, and providing high-quality technical feedback.

This opportunity is ideal for professionals with strong backend development skills in technologies such as Java, Node.js, Go, or Rust. A Cybersecurity or SecOps background is highly preferred, particularly for candidates with hands-on experience in secure software development, application security, penetration testing, or security-focused code reviews. No prior AI experience is required—your software engineering expertise is what matters.

A Cybersecurity/SecOps background or exposure is highly preferred

Scope of Work

  1. Build and maintain reinforcement learning environments that exercise real backend programming tasks.
  2. Write backend services and the supporting code that powers those environments, using Java, Python, Node.js, Go, Rust, or similar.
  3. Write thorough unit and integration tests. Test coverage is central to this role, not an afterthought.
  4. Review code for correctness, performance, maintainability, and security, and give clear feedback to other engineers.
  5. Solve programming tasks and document your technical reasoning so it can be used to improve AI model quality.
  6. Work asynchronously with a distributed team and write down engineering decisions clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Strong experience in backend software development using Java, Node.js, Go, Rust, or similar technologies.
  2. Proven experience building scalable backend systems and APIs.
  3. Experience with debugging, performance optimization, and automated testing.
  4. Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and code review.
  5. Cybersecurity/SecOps experience or exposure is highly preferred, including areas such as application security, secure coding, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, OWASP, CWE, or security-focused code reviews.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Experience working effectively in remote, distributed teams.
  8. Familiarity with AI, data-driven, or large-scale technical projects is a plus.
