AI Engineer (Contract)
Please note that this is a contract role providing services to Microsoft through external staffing partners of Allegis Global Solutions. If you are selected for this role, you will be employed by AGS and will not be an employee of Microsoft.
Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated automation-focused software engineer to join a dynamic team dedicated to transforming how operational workflows are managed at scale. This role is central to replacing time-consuming, manual, and spreadsheet-driven processes with robust, software-driven automation pipelines that integrate diverse data sources, enforce validation logic, generate actionable reports, and support human review where appropriate. The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguous environments, excels at translating complex operational requirements into clean technical designs, and takes pride in building reliable, maintainable systems that engineering and operations teams can trust. This is a fully remote, full-time engagement with a standard Monday through Friday schedule, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful and measurable impact on the efficiency and scalability of critical data-center onboarding operations.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design and implement automation pipelines that streamline operational, validation, and engineering workflows
- Gather and analyze requirements from engineering, operations, and program stakeholders; translate ambiguous manual processes into clear technical designs
- Integrate data from internal systems, databases, work tracking tools, spreadsheets, and document repositories
- Build software solutions that ingest, normalize, validate, and report on operational and telemetry-related data
- Develop reusable validation rules, checks, and reporting modules that can scale across multiple workflows
- Automate manual review processes while preserving appropriate human-in-the-loop approval gates
- Create reliable scripts, services, or tools with clear logging, error handling, retries, and auditability
- Prepare technical specifications, test plans, and implementation documentation
- Modify and improve existing automation tools to meet new standards, requirements, and operating models
- Conduct unit testing, integration testing, and post-implementation validation
- Troubleshoot issues across new and legacy systems, identify root causes, and implement durable fixes
- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure automation outputs are actionable, trusted, and operationally usable
Requirements:
- 5 to 7 years of software engineering or automation engineering experience is preferred
- Demonstrated experience building backend tools, data pipelines, workflow automation, or internal engineering platforms
- Prior experience building tools used directly by engineering or operations teams is strongly preferred
- Experience working with AI systems is required; candidates lacking this experience will not be considered
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related technical field is required
- Strong programming experience with Python, PowerShell, C#, or similar automation-focused languages, with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on software or automation engineering experience
- Demonstrated experience building automation pipelines, backend tools, data workflows, or system integrations, with a minimum of 3 years in this area
- Proficiency working with structured and semi-structured data sources including SQL, KQL query results, APIs, CSV, JSON, logs, and spreadsheets, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, software design principles, and maintainable code practices
- Experience integrating with APIs, databases, work item tracking systems, files, and enterprise data sources
- Experience with validation frameworks, data quality checks, automated reporting, or operational readiness tooling
- Strong troubleshooting skills across both new and legacy production systems
- Experience writing unit tests, test data, and validation plans for automation workflows
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments and convert manual business processes into reliable software systems
- Experience with cloud or enterprise data platforms is preferred
- Familiarity with telemetry systems, operational monitoring, or industrial and IoT data workflows is preferred
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines or similar engineering lifecycle tools is preferred
- Strong communication skills with the ability to document technical designs for non-specialist stakeholders
