Physics Subject Matter Expert (AI Training) About the Role We're looking for physics experts to help train and evaluate cutting-edge AI models.
Applied Physics Specialist
Job description
Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)
About the Role
What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the fundamental laws of the universe? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to challenge cutting-edge AI models on their grasp of physical reality — exposing gaps in reasoning, catching violations of first principles, and helping ensure that the next generation of AI systems actually respects the laws of nature.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and specialists who want to apply their expertise at the frontier of AI development. No prior AI experience needed — just mastery of physics and a rigorous, analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Physics Problems — Craft complex, open-ended problems at PhD qualifying exam level that require multi-step logical reasoning, mathematical derivation, and deep domain knowledge across areas like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics
- Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step "golden responses" with flawless physical constants, unit conversions, and logical flow — the benchmark against which AI outputs are measured
- Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated proofs, derivations, and simulations for physical consistency; identify where models "hallucinate" physics that violates conservation laws, boundary conditions, or first principles
- Refine Model Behaviour — Provide structured, expert feedback that improves AI reasoning in physics-informed contexts — helping models understand constraints that no competent physicist would ever overlook
- Document Failure Modes — Systematically record how and where AI reasoning breaks down, contributing to benchmarks that push the boundaries of what AI can reliably understand about the physical world
Who You Are
- PhD-level expertise in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field (completed or in final stages)
- Domain mastery across the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional analytical writing — you can explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured prose that leaves no ambiguity
- Uncompromising precision — you catch errors in units, scientific notation, and logical flow instinctively
- Self-directed — comfortable working independently, managing your own schedule, and delivering high-quality work without hand-holding
- No prior AI or data annotation experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
- Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in research publishing, academic instruction, or technical writing
- Familiarity with AI language models as a user or researcher
Why Join Us
- Work on high-impact AI projects in collaboration with leading AI research labs
- Fully remote and asynchronous — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually rigorous work
- Apply your physics expertise to one of the most consequential challenges in modern AI
- Exposure to how frontier large language models are trained and evaluated
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
