Job description

About the Role

This is a remote, hourly contractor role for a Chemistry Quality Assurance Lead (QAL) responsible for overseeing quality, consistency, and contributor performance across chemistry AI training projects.

You will review AI-generated chemistry content, evaluate trainer and QA work, maintain scientific quality standards, support onboarding activities, manage contributor performance, and ensure adherence to chemistry review guidelines and evaluation rubrics.

The role combines chemistry expertise, scientific quality assurance, AI evaluation, laboratory safety awareness, contributor support, and process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Monitoring

  • Review chemistry training items and QA outputs
  • Identify quality issues and recurring scientific errors
  • Provide detailed feedback to contributors
  • Escalate critical quality concerns

Scientific Review

Evaluate AI-generated chemistry explanations, stoichiometric calculations, reaction mechanisms, organic chemistry analyses, inorganic chemistry discussions, physical chemistry reasoning, analytical chemistry workflows, biochemistry concepts, spectroscopy interpretations, and chemical nomenclature.

Verify scientific accuracy, chemical reasoning quality, calculation correctness, reaction validity, unit consistency, terminology accuracy, safety awareness, and clarity of explanation.

Trainer & QA Communication

  • Communicate guideline updates and workflow changes
  • Clarify chemistry-specific review standards
  • Maintain contributor alignment

Question Resolution

Respond to contributor questions regarding chemical reasoning, reaction mechanisms, stoichiometry, chemical equations, units and formulas, laboratory procedures, chemical nomenclature, spectroscopy interpretation, safety considerations, and rubric interpretation.

Contributor Activation Management

  • Follow up with inactive contributors and track engagement
  • Encourage participation and task completion

Documentation Management

Create and maintain style guides, chemistry FAQs, quality notes, calibration tasks, examples, trackers, honeypots, and onboarding materials.

Onboarding & Training

  • Conduct onboarding and training sessions
  • Explain project workflows, evaluation rubrics, chemistry quality standards, scientific review procedures, and laboratory safety expectations

Risk & Safety Review

Identify and flag unsafe laboratory recommendations, hazardous chemical handling advice, misleading chemistry claims, invalid reaction guidance, dangerous experimental procedures, environmental safety concerns, and health and exposure risks.

Process Improvement

  • Identify recurring quality gaps and recommend workflow improvements
  • Help build scalable QA processes for chemistry projects

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, or related discipline
  • 3+ years of professional experience in chemistry research, laboratory work, scientific writing, technical review, quality control, formulation science, analytical chemistry, or chemistry education
  • Strong understanding of general, organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, stoichiometry, spectroscopy, and reaction mechanisms
  • Ability to identify incorrect assumptions, calculation errors, invalid reaction logic, missing units, unsafe recommendations, hallucinated scientific facts, and misleading claims
  • Strong written English, scientific feedback, and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory documentation, analytical methods, spectroscopy interpretation, chromatography, titration analysis, molecular structure interpretation, chemical nomenclature, or SDS review
  • Experience leading or supporting researchers, technical reviewers, QA teams, or annotation teams
  • Experience with AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, or rubric-based QA
  • Familiarity with Discord, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and project management systems
