Senior Product Designer
Job description
About 9amHealth
9amHealth is an AI-enabled virtual specialty care platform focused on managing high-cost chronic conditions at scale. The company partners with employers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to deliver comprehensive, cost-effective medical care for individuals living with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Members receive access to specialized clinicians, including endocrinologists, obesity medicine specialists, and clinical pharmacists, at-home lab testing, prescription medications, and lifestyle support.
9amHealth was founded in 2021 and is backed by leading healthcare investors like Define Ventures, SemperVirens, 7Wire Ventures, and The Cigna Group Ventures.
About the role
We’re hiring a Senior Product Designer to own 9amHealth’s consumer app — the daily touchpoint for people managing diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, or weight. This is a craft-led, senior IC role. You’ll design what our members see, what they tap, and how the experience responds. The quality of what you ship matters as much as the thinking behind it.
The mandate is broad and the canvas is genuinely open. Several tracks in the 9amHealth member experience are still largely untouched: mental health support, movement, and more. You’ll put your fingerprint on labs, medications, virtual visits, education, nutrition, tracking, and the onboarding and re-engagement patterns that tie them together. For an ambitious senior designer who wants to shape a product from the ground up, that scope is rare.
Our members carry real clinical risk, including vulnerability to disordered eating patterns. That means no unnecessary pressure, no calorie scolding, no shame loops. Holding “engaging” and “clinically safe” in tension at the same time is the real design challenge here, and the thing that makes this role genuinely hard and genuinely interesting. It’s also the part that no tool can do for you,it requires judgment.
The member app is also tightly integrated with our EMR, which we built ourselves. Clinical data surfaces on the consumer side. Member actions trigger Care Team workflows. A “message your Care Team” button has a queue behind it. A surfaced lab value is the tip of a workflow. You’ll work primarily on the consumer surface, but you need to think across that seam, because your decisions shape the clinical team’s day.
This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to our Head of Design. You’ll work day-to-day with a full product squad: a product manager, front-end and back-end engineers, and QA. Our product and engineering team is distributed across San Diego, (CA) and Vienna (AU), and this role is based in EST for maximum overlap with both.
What you'll do
- Own the companion app end to end: flows, surfaces, interaction patterns, visual system. Craft and quality are your accountability.
- Design the daily engagement loop: build habit-forming experiences that drive sustained return behavior — activation funnels, onboarding flows, empty and sparse states, and re-engagement mechanics Move from idea to working prototype in hours rather than sprints, using whatever tooling gets you there. Modern design practice includes AI-assisted tools; how you use them is up to you, and we expect you to have opinions about when their output is worth keeping.
- Stay close to our members: run research to understand what’s working, where they’re dropping off, and what moments in their journey matter most to get right.
- Build and maintain the design system your teammates rely on.
- Partner closely with the clinicians, coaches, and care coordinators who use our EMR, so your consumer-side decisions improve their workload rather than adding to it.
- Make the hard tradeoffs where member clarity, clinician workload, and business economics pull in different directions, and write the reasoning down so the team can hold you to it later.
What we're looking for
- A designer who leads with craft and backs it with strategy. You’ve owned a consumer product end to end,not just contributed to one. You’ve carried a real member-facing product from an ambiguous problem to a shipped outcome, and you can point to what moved: activation rate, return frequency, sustained engagement. You know what you deliberately left out, and what you’d do differently now.
- You have a strong visual and interaction point of view. Your work is authored:it has a sensibility that’s identifiably yours, not a generic output you merely directed. You can walk through your decisions, explain the tradeoffs you made, and critique your own work honestly.
- You’ve thought seriously about how to build daily habits without manipulative loops. You understand forgiveness mechanics, intrinsic motivation design, and progress framing, and you have opinions about when each one is right. If your default answer to “how do you drive retention” starts and ends with streaks and badges, this isn’t the right role.
- You know how to run research and turn it into decisions, not just user interviews for their own sake, but research that changes what you build or gives you the confidence to stay the course.
- You’re comfortable designing in ambiguity. You can move fast without a complete brief, make defensible calls with incomplete information, and course-correct without drama when new data arrives.
- Strong written communication. The kind of designer who can defend a decision in two sentences and knows the difference between a tradeoff and an excuse.
Nice to have
You’ve shipped clinician-facing tooling or worked with an internally built EMR at a digital health company. The member app is your primary surface, but you’ll collaborate with the designers working on our EMR side, and that context raises the ceiling on what you can contribute. If you don’t have that background, tell us how you think about designing consumer products that sit on top of operational systems.
Compensation for this role is up to $175,000 base salary, with flexibility based on experience and overall qualifications.
