Job description

Environmental Engineering — AI Data Trainer

About the Role

AI is being asked to solve some of the world's most complex environmental problems — but it needs expert guidance to get it right. That's where you come in.

We're looking for environmental engineers to help train and evaluate advanced AI models on topics like water and wastewater treatment, air quality management, hazardous waste remediation, and environmental compliance. Your expertise will directly shape how AI reasons through real-world engineering challenges — making models smarter, safer, and more technically rigorous.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. Work on your own schedule, 10–40 hours per week.

What You'll Do

  • Design Complex Engineering Problems — Create advanced, domain-specific challenges spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and more
  • Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Develop rigorous, step-by-step technical responses — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion simulations — that serve as benchmark answers for AI training
  • Audit AI Outputs — Evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and mathematical proofs for technical accuracy, regulatory compliance (EPA, ISO 14001), and safety
  • Refine AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological processes or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts, then provide structured feedback to improve model performance

Who You Are

  • Pursuing or holding a Master's or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering (with an environmental focus), or a closely related discipline
  • Strong foundational knowledge in one or more of: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
  • Able to communicate complex engineering and ecological concepts clearly and precisely in writing
  • Detail-oriented — you catch unit conversion errors, flawed chemical equations, and regulatory logic gaps
  • No prior AI experience required — we'll get you up to speed

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, data quality assurance, or evaluation workflows
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., SWMM, AERMOD, EPA models)
  • Background in EHS compliance or environmental consulting

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects in collaboration with world-leading AI research labs
  • Fully remote and async — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance perks: autonomy, variety, and global collaboration
  • Gain hands-on exposure to how large language models are trained and evaluated
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
  • Your domain expertise directly contributes to making AI more accurate and trustworthy in fields that matter for the planet
